This was covered first by Nat "King" Cole but done by Sinatra and others later.
An unusual, almost haunting song, the "backstory" is even more interesting. For those who might care:

A story by the LA times:

One of those songs that may never be the biggest hit ever, but may endure for a long, long time.
I'm partial to Pomplamoose's cover.
Pomplamoose is sadly no more, but the singer, Nataly Dawn, was launched to mild fame by their YouTube success, and was even featured on eTown. http://www.etown.org/shows/frightened-rabbit_ndawn/
Well I'm tickled pink you are partial to the Pomplamoose cover. It's great.
However, for what it's worth the post was about the SONG and the strange and delightful life of he guy who wrote the song. AND , how it came to Nat Cole's attention (there's a story!).
But hey, post a thread about Pomplamoose (or whomever) and we will have a regular fun fest about who covered the thing best.
Birds?
What birds?
