I had to look up what "slack key" was . And after I watched the guy it's just what I thought. It just means open tuning. In this case he's tuned to a D chord.
I'm not much of a finger picker so most of what I do with open tuning is a couple of led Zepplin songs or when I play slide guitar.
This is probably way rejuvenate your desire to play again because it's easy.
What I absolutely hate about open tuning is when that's ALL my Friends want to play. I hate trying to play along with someone playing in open tuning.
An old friend came by who always played good guitar and NOW all he can do is play open tuning crap. My other friend is the same and he's really good but doesn't have a clue what cords he's even playing.
...and I've watched and heard at TVg beats on his "Gee-Tar". I'll tell ya what, he may have bad breath, flat feet, warts on nose and even his dogs won't come unless he's got a pork chop tied around his neck, but the boy can flat pound out some tunes. My guess is he mostly sits on a stump and plays for his own amusement. Maybe he will upload something on You Tube for us someday.
That would be cool.
