Yeah, well I am not responsible for that movie and I do not recommend it. So I hope this gets me off the hook for even mentioning it.

You're not the only one to mention this movie. I mean, it was okay. But geez, I think it was up for an Oscar in some category. Next thing we know, Adam Sandler will be receiving a Nobel Prize.

I brought back lots kiwis and oranges from California a couple weeks ago. My wife took many of them to work to give away to co workers. I picked most of the oranges myself. The kiwis I bought 10 for a dollar. That is one thing I do like about California.

That is one of the many things I miss about SoCal. We had a lemon tree in our yard, as well as an orange tree. I LOVED going out to pick fruit when we wanted some. Another friend had an enormous grapefruit tree. That was fun too.

Curried-something with basmati rice is good but I'd be just as happy with a cheeseburger. My DH thinks of me as a philistine. He's prolly right.

Mom has an orange tree in her back yard, as a kid we could lean over and snag oranges from our tree-house's balcony. Yum.

I love a good curry, too bad a good curry can be hard to find-- actually, I think I just love things with coconut, coconut milk or even coconut cream in them

You are talking Thai curry then, I was talking Indian curry. I like some Thai curries but I much prefer the hot and spicy Indian ones.

Don't get me wrong-- I like a good Indian curry, but so many places just go with the 'generic' hot and call that flavor (a lot of Mexican places do this too). Its like insted of focusing on the combination of flavors of the spices and using good spices they make it hot.

MMmm, I'm hitting the best friends house for dinner tonight and her mom is in town and is making us a good old fashoned brisket. Yum. Its nothing international, but I'm pretty sure it is going to be darned tasty.

Been looking at myself in the mirror and wondering if it wasn't a bit early for the Summer hair cut. Guess I didn't say how short, when I ask the "Other Half," to shorten my hair. "Oh, well, Hair today, gone tomorrow," or something like that. So he cuts hair among other things, includeing his own.

Thinking about putting some more things on the wall in my computer room. I took down all of my hastily tacked up political stuff from the pre presidential election era so now I have some space. I'll put up some wooden masks and artifacts from Fiji and some maps. I have a couple of photos that need to go up too. Then maybe I'll put some bumper stickers on my truck so that everyone who happens to be following me will know my beliefs. :D

In most cases bumper stickers are like Tattoos, why deface the looks of your vehicle. My only bumper sticker is my AAA Towing one. But do admit to reading what others have.

If I could find the "I like Children. Just can't eat a whole one". I'd use it. It goes so far beyond the pale that it's funny. (To me anyway).

But that's not what I'm doing right now. (Topic title).

I'm about to shut this down and read some Christopher Hitchens. I'm embarrassed that I was not even aware of his writing until a conversation with Cletus1 a couple of years ago. Reading, Letters to a Young Contrarian now. Brilliant! Ordered Why Orwell and Thomas Paine's Rights of Man. read God is Not Great first. (The man makes his case brilliantly regardless of what conclusions one reaches.)
I sit with his books and a dictionary. The man uses language very effectively, but my vocabulary is not up to par.

AN ASIDE: He says it is not so important what we think. It's very important how we think. Grist for the mill!

Christopher Hitchens, awk. That man is a walking ulcer.

Dinner last night was quite nice. The curry was okay (I'm not a big fan) but I like it with a chutney. DH prepared a raita which was pretty good. Dessert was two kinds of sherbet ice cream; cocoanut with fruit pieces and tarot root. Yes, tarot root. It was purple and not too bad. It looked pretty in the bowl with sliced kiwis and a Digestive chocolate biscuit.

I hate when the clocks change. <_<

Hey, back up! Or not.
The man has forgotten more than we will ever know. Well educated, well read, well traveled, a man apart, a mind that speeds past all the dogma and stale traditions of common sense. I not only admire him, I learn from him. I don't want to be him, or be like him. But, to call him a walking ulcer is to "protest too much, my lady".
My opinion, but shared, if only by some.

Wonk, I agree that Christopher Hitchens' logic and critical thinking skills are enviable. I personally like his writing style. I have read plenty of his articles in Free Inquiry Magazine and they are always good. However, I do not agree with some of his politics and he can come off a bit arrogant. Two other books that I recommend are The End of Faith by Sam Harris and The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. They are two of my favourite books. I like them more than Christopher Hitchens' books. I think you would enjoy them.

There is this little place over by Golden Gate park, well, a few blocks away- that does amazing gelato but they do it in the more asian flavors for the most part. Their Taro is yummy, the green tea is delicious but there melon is so tasty you think you are just eating a ripe melon. Mmm. Last time we were there I had the coconut and the melon. Yum.

Today is the oldest boy's birthday. Thirteen. Wow, I am officially the parent of a teenager. So adding that into the 'what do I need to do today' list I need to make a cake before dessert. He wants one from scratch with either whipped cream or tiramisu filling and ganache frosting (the closet gourmet)-- like he'll have room after his requested trip to the buffet for dinner. But then I also need to clean up the house downstairs (mom comes at 11), get Connor to his speech evaluation at 12 and so on.

Busy day, and yet what am I doing?

But the coffee is good.

Looking forward to the IEP meeting at 9am for the middle child...he's going back to school!!!! Guess I was getting on his nerves as much as he was getting on mine, because he asked to go back...hee hee!
He did learn a LOT while being educated online and by me...went up a whole 2 grade levels in almost everything in only 4 1/2 months!
Now, if the docs and I can keep him stable next fall/winter so I don't have to do this again...

Clete, I'm finding that I enjoy Hitchens' writing most when he is NOT writing about religion. I see the value of arguing for a secular society but tire of it quickly. And yea, he does pose and strut a lot, arrogant to a fault. Seems to be a trait intellectuals can't resist. I suspect he sees it as "marketing" and it gets his work out there in the wider world.
I think I read Sam Harris and let it slip out of my memory. Maybe I'll revisit him, and Dawkins.
I always take time to slip in some Elmore Leonard or Walter Mosley between. I need mind candy.
Cheap fiction, good coffee, interesting women, and a beer now and then. Damn, life is good! Speaking of interesting women, say hi to Mrs. Clete please. You don't deserve her.

Hah. I say that about him because he is caustic, dyspeptic and arrogant. He also has a lot of negative things to say about the USA and given that he's a 'furriner' he should mind the problems in his own country.

But that's just my 'pinion. -_-

For cheap, fun fiction, there's always Harlan Coben. He spins a good, if somewhat vacuous, yarn.

Today is supposed to be a lovely day. DH and I are going to steam clean the outdoor gas grill. It is a may-ess.
Today was garbage day. I love garbage day. There's such a sense of accomplishment when I see those empty cans on the sidewalk. Strange, I know.

My sister and her husband are having a knock-down, drag-out episode in their latest divorce sage. Last night my ex-bro-in-law called to tell me of her latest transgressions. What he doesn't know is that she has hired a Big Gun lawyer (Raoul Felder) who is gonna go after him one pubic hair at a time. (Pardon my analogy but it is apropos).

Gee, I can't wait to get to NY on the 2nd. I have a de-lovely flight planned, too. Leave Medford for Portland at 5:00 a.m. Get flight to Chicago at 1:00 p.m. Get flight to NY at 7:45 p.m. Arrive NY at 10:55 p.m. OMG.
