10 Scary Predictions That Came True
[Image: globalwarming135.jpg]Scientists are always making dire predictions about global warming. Well, guess what? Here are 10 that came true.
While some people insist global warming isn't real, they might want to take a look at this list compiled for London's Times Online by Tim Flannery, the internationally acclaimed author of "The Weather Makers: Our Changing Climate and What It Means for Life."
Here are 10 scary predictions that actually did come true. (When the original predictor is known, it is included.)
1. The Earth will warm as more carbon dioxide is put into the atmosphere.(Svante Arrhenius, a Swedish chemist and one of the founders of the science of physical chemistry, in 1893)
2. We will begin to see noticeable changes in the Earth's climate by around 2000.(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change scientists).
3. The sea level will start rising.
4. The Earth's ice will start melting rapidly.(James Hanson, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies)
5. Hurricanes will increase in intensity.(Alfred Russel Wallace, British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist and biologist, in 1900)
6. Species will begin going extinct as a result of climate change.
7. Australia will start drying out.(Scientists from the Hadley Centre for Climate Change)
8. Tropical diseases will increase.
9. Food crops will be adversely affected.
10. Carbon dioxide will begin to acidify the ocean.

I don't blame you people for your reaction to not wanting to defend the outrages predictions that have not come true. You truly are in a tough spot. Cheers

Yawn. Yawn, simple Google search disproves most of those.. Check your meds before you present your " facts" chuck

The one thing "the scientist" have yet to agree upon is that time when whe have reached the "tipping point" (for lack of a better phrase) when no matter what we do we will never again be able to reclaim conditions we have understood to be "normal".

So, maybe it's time for these same scientists to turn their attention to what we are gong to have to do to live in these conditions and help us prepare (as nearly as possible) to survive in reasonable comfort.

So, "they" have underestemated the pace and impacts of global warming. What do they suggest we do to DEAL with the effects? Science will need to instruct us about resonable options before government can start making changes. I don't  hear much about that.

PS: But "The Donald" wants to put coal miners back to work and make sure we use all the natural energy available to us so our economy can prosper. Now THAT we don't need. (But we do need, as near as possible, to help those miners who have lost jobs to be relocated or retrained (or whatever) to keep the people of those regions from sliding into poverty so bad that is wrecks the social and moral structures of their communities.)

Personally, I think we reached the tipping point, because people will not change.
There are people who are working on the problem, looking for better plants to survive the changes.

I'm not sure I understand you. WE, the USA are the single biggest greenhouse gas producer. It's mostly because we burn coal to produce electrical power. Second is all of our automobiles.
The government IS ALREADY "making changes".
As a matter of fact Oregon is the first state to set a goal to eliminate coal fired power plants.

I guess it the "reasonable options" things you say scientists need to instruct us about that confuses me. But lots of things confuse me Razz

I guess you are right: People (we) are not going to make the necessary changes to prevent the climate from going down the tubes. Get our your sunscreen and forget watering your cannabis plants. I'm glad "they" are working on the problem.  So, where are they moving New Orleans to?

Fortunately most people are doing more and more to reduce their power consumption. This is IMO mostly for their own benefit.. to reduce their bills. But it's also a step to reduce producing greenhouse gases. Smiling

That's the good news.
The bad news is that far too many places on the globe are burnng coal to make electricity, and coal puts out some nasty stuff. (And there is no such thing as "clean coal")
More and more people on the planet want automobiles and it will a long time before most cars run on anything but carbon fuels.
We love our green lawns and lush golf courses, wash our cars very often whether they need it or not, flush too often, fail to repari water leaks, and put too much water in our whiskey. Very few of us save rain water.

But, we will make some gains like the one you pointed to above. Too little, too late, our grandchildren will, without a doubt, live in a warmer, dryer, more hostle world where people fight for fresh potable water and energy sources.

But...If we would throw money at it like NASA did reaching the moon, we might have a chance to create ways to make the new climate livable. Think we will? Think again. There are too many "Trump people" who will prevent it.

Wish your grandchildren well.

What's that got to do with anything? Do you have a coal fired well pump? Razz Why would any of us save rain water?
That's one good thing about our Valley , there is no water shortage.

Like the farmer said when his horse died, "He ain't never done that before".

Yep. We here in the Valley of The Rogue have lots of water. We are so lucky. And south of us they are digging ever deeper trying to find even a bit more water. So water is going to become even more precious as things get hotter and dryer. You can bet that California will make us an "offer we can't refuse" and build a huge pipe to take some of our water south.

Oh sorry!  Embarrassed Forgot. You just wanted to argue a bit.  Laughing

RE: Record Breaking Weather - Wonky3 - 07-28-2016

I really hope this balmy weather continues! Ya gotta love it.

The thermometer in my back yard reads 78 Degrees F. And I know it's a good one because I got it from a guy on Craigs List who promised me it was "right on".

But I've got a bunch of wimpy plants that are gasping and carrying on like crazy. Hey...I just watered them four days ago. Gave 'em each a cup or so of good fresh Medford water.

My wife's cats are flat on the hardwood floors spead out like Eagles. The older one tried to climb in the fridge when I opened it to get my fishing worms.

I'm a science kind of guy. If the themotor indicates 78 degrees, it's a balmy Orgeon day.

Facts is facts. Just plain ignorant to argue with science stuff.

And when you can't help yourself and once again start talking about how we must behave and so forth I will still laugh at you Razz

Damn Wonky, sounds like you got one of them European thermometers. They measure everything in metric. So like 78 °C is really hot.

10. Carbon dioxide will begin to acidify the ocean.

and on and on.
I suggest the last one for you.
Hmm did you Google the kerry thing? How'd that work out for him? I could find Google posts to refute everyone of your posts you have posted. Google the insane predictions made the "global experts " that have been predicted and have been wildly wrong. Do it, post them here Chuck and be honest how wrong they were. I bet you don't have the honesty to do so.I'll help you out on the kerry thing, he senate floor and predicted the demise of the artic ice cap in 5 years. Now square that with the 2016 global warming expedition stuck in the ice. How's the math work on that Chuck? I could post a long list of the colossal wrong predictions and outright lies that have not come to pass by the mainstream "experts". Post them up Chuck can you be honest on where they have gone way wrong?

Damn Wonky, sounds like you got one of them European thermometers. They measure everything in metric. So like 78 °C is really hot.

You mean there is more than one kind of hot? I'll tell ya, the world is just too complicated.

Quote:. The 10 warmest years in the 134-year record all have occurred since 2000, with the exception of 1998. The year 2015 ranks as the warmest on record.
