No.  It was an accuracy thing.  UTR was wrong. A lot.

I remember him. He married Twisted Whiskers, a nice lady he met on the forum. Right?

Yes.  I had no problem with her.  Anyway, imagine UTR running a page about local law enforcement and crime. It's not him, but they are all hand in glove.  It's a very weird and exclusive FB page. The Scanner Wars page calls itself :the first amendment page", but it bans anyone who speaks an opinion. Or even looks as if they may have one. I tried it out, because it had the traffic and I thought perhaps it would be something a bit like the old MTF. Wrong. Very, very wrong.   Laughing

I heard the Jo Co page was taken over by the Jackson County page. Who seems to ban anyone for just having a thought.  So, I'd guess that's why?

This shit reads like a soap opera. Grab some popcorn.

The Josephine County group formed a while back - it gained a lot of traction due to people bulk-adding others, since Facebook doesn't have a way to keep people from adding you to groups without approval.  There are some other smaller but equally informative groups out there with a higher signal-to-noise ratio.  Also, it helps to not have a "lead" admin who ignores the rules they enforce by posting in "closed" threads, calling people names and banning them if they so much as respond or disagree politely, and other typical power-hungry bullshit.

The Jackson County group formed after the largest group for the area shut down, and actually incorporated as an LLC in order to try to make money off of relaying scanner traffic. I brought up IN PRIVATE to them that this might be a violation of the Communications Act (section 705) - https://www.fcc.gov/guides/interception-and-divulgence-radio-communications - and they banned me for it.  Laughing  To top it off, two of the admins in this group frequently also engage in behavior they say isn't allowed, as well as outright tell people in public that disagreeing with them will get them booted.

At some point a couple of months ago, the Josephine County group promoted someone to admin who tanked the entire thing - publishing porn, kicking everyone out, then eventually deleting the entire group from Facebook.  During this, the Jackson group created a Josephine group and is performing the "bulk group add" thing to try to grow it and profit.  The "original" Josephine group shortly thereafter started a new group.

As a scanner & radio nerd for years, most of the Facebook groups are just a total clusterfuck. Almost every post has someone asking for the names of people involved in situations that are still unfolding - even shootings, suicides, domestic situations, and other sensitive topics. When I participated, I refused to post names and exact addresses - and actually got a lot of flak for it from the gossip-hungry crowd.  Rolling Eyes  The hobby used to be about public awareness and safety, but that element is mostly gone now, replaced by nosy assholes.

RE: a different random thought - Tiamat - 07-20-2015

It IS a soap opera. But I have no idea what the names or places are of the smaller sites.  And as far as I can tell, in line with your info, I was banned off the Scanner page for pointing out that it wasn't good or right to post about someone's family members.  For instance when a person got arrested for drunk driving, they posted his name and picture.  Then another poster started posting about that person's mother, place of business and opinion of her for having birthed such a POS.  So, I pointed out that was not cool.  Boom. Within seconds I was banned. And despite requests to rejoin have been resoundingly rejected.

I guess so. For whatever reason it's hard to find anyone on the right to admit we over logged our forests.

I don't think a person needs a degree to understand logic. Forest fires are natural but they didn't destroy everything in the past like they do now when a forest has all the big trees removed. Big trees have VERY think nearly fireproof bark.
Simple logic will tell you that's WHY there are BIG TREES hundreds of years old.And also why there are BIG stumps

Big trees have big canopies shading the ground, holding moisture and preventing an over growth of very flammable brush.

Big trees are worth the big money. So of course they were removed first. It's typical to blame the loss of timber revenue on the spotted owl with nary a mind to the amount and style of logging that was done.

On the other hand only idiots can't understand that logging can be a sustainable business. Only idiots block every single sale with our court system.

UTR was just very adversarial. Very derisive. That's the one thing I see about most of the conservative posters. They aren't interested in real discussion. They are, however very interested in insulting and berating others and using very disrespectful tones to anyone they don't agree with. Liberals can do that too, but the conservative poster who is able to discuss thoughtfully and reasonably seems a rare breed. UTR was very oppositional.

My son wanted to go to the army navy store to buy new khaki's.  I remember these stores being surplus stores. They were cool. They were funky.  This was not an army/navy surplus store. This was a full on store devoted to new "military" gear.  I know most of you won't find this surprising. But I've never been in there. They did have a bit of old gear in the back, but basically it was a military "blackbirds" or "REI".  Kind of made me sad. Sad

Does the military have any surplus anymore?

Yes, but they moved their outlet stores to the middle east.

Are you talking about the store on Crater lake avenue right near Vilas and 62? Some of their stuff is used. I have bought some shirts from there.

But yeah the days of REAL military surplus cheap stuff have been gone for years.

Yes.  That's the place. To it's credit it doesn't even have the word "surplus" in the name. Nowadays with survivalists, psudo military, militia types, re enactors, and just plain old "I'm such a bad ass" types, it's a thriving business. the "surplus" seems to be an afterthought, and not much of one at that.

Your description of that stores customers reminds me of Righties putting "liberals" all in the same pigeon hole. Also you left out HUNTERS, Razz pretty sure they buy a lot of the camo stuff

I needed a bag to carry my Chemo Medicine pump that connected to a port in my chest. I found one at that store that fit so perfectly it looked as if it was designed for that purpose. Desert sand color with zipper and fit on my belt.

They have a ton of bags of all shapes and sizes. I bought an awesome long sleeve shirt, yes it;s camo (digital) and I'm pretty sure it actually is military surplus. It has lots of pockets with Velcro and and it zips instead of buttons. I love that shirt LOL, it's a great work shirt. Anyway I think I only paid 14 bucks Big Grin

Damn after all that describing I easily found a photo....[Image: 5765-.jpg]

Sure...campers too.  And hunters. I'm not pigeonholing. It's just there. I see the stuff. I find it disturbing that they sell tactical vests that have POLICE and SHERIFF lettering on them and handcuffs with unreachable key holes, telescoping batons and what not.  Who the hell are those for?  But there was a lot of cool stuff there too. My son bought my DIL one of those batons since she seems to have taken on the role of neighborhood bulldog and is out at night amongst a bunch of drunks and drug addicts, just doing her job.  So, it has a function.  He spent a lot of money on Camo gear.  It wasn't the camo he wanted. It was the pockets.

Yeah ,, the pockets Big Grin plus they are just nice tough shirts

Who buys them? Maybe the Police and the sheriffs Razz

handcuffs with unreachable key holes

Maybe bounty hunters who don't want someone with a hidden key to get loose?

I find it  hard to believe that the local police and sherrif send their people for gear to the army/navy store. Maybe I'm way wrong.

Sure...Bounty Hunters.  I have no doubt. That's some of the folks who might want those.

My point is, if just anyone can go pick up gear with POLICE written on them, that's a bit of invitation to some, and I repeat the qualifier: SOME crazy fuckers.

I'm not a paranoid kind of person. But there's a little madness in a store like that. It's where you would go if you were a bit on the extreme side of the scale.
