Hey, I know why your garden died off after you used the straw compost.

I actually am not sure it was the compost. I may have burnt it that year with some green manure...but what is your theory?

BTW, Cletus, My squash are not nearly as big as that.

The straw is a carbon, and you actually need nitrogen also to make things break down correctly. Nitrogen comes from green stuff, carbon comes from brown stuff basically. All that straw most likely didn't break down and
compost fully and when you put your starts in it killed them using up all
the available nitrogen. I learned this the hard way so I did a little research and haven't had that happen again.

I do. Garden wise, I have to live vicariously this year. Sad

OK, for you.......here is a pic of my outdoor experiment.....

Ah-ha! Hydroponic gardening. Hmm, I suppose that is technically not cheating.Rolling Eyes And I know that you started from seed, you shared a photo. So you get extra credit for that. How is your Okra doing?

Well then, I'll just rub it in; after I posted those photos, I went back out to do some weeding and found a nice zuke that I picked.Smiling

Stones painted as strawberries when put around strawberry plants in the spring will keep birds from eating your berries because the birds will think the ripened berries are stones.

Good theory. But I think I burnt it with the green manure, made it too hot. They say if you mulch your garden you have to replenish it, because the mulch is actually pulling nitrogen from the soil to break itself down.

How old do you think your turtle is, btw?
It's good to see he's still around!
I think these stone strawberries, in a pretty basket, would be a great gift for a gardener; especially one who has everything already.
It would be a fun project, too. Especially if one has girls needing a project. Laughing
To keep them out of the peppers and strawberries! Big Grin

I showed the pic to the kids and they can't wait to try painting them...

As for my garden grazer (sp)...I've had the turtle over 40 years, but not sure how old he was when I rescued him from becoming road kill. He has been passed around through the family at the times I was traveling and unable to care for him. Three different families have enjoyed him through the years and it's good to have him back. It's good he will give another generation of children someone to look after too. Big Grin Am I starting to sound like Methuselah? Laughing

I've never heard of that...guess I don't know much about turtles.
Do the two of them like each other in the man/woman way?
