The Josephine County Sheriff's office says it happened around 10:15 p.m. One suspect was killed and sheriff's deputies sustained minor injuries, detectives say.

Erin Maue with the sheriff's office says detectives are not looking for additional suspects, and there is no threat to the general public.

[*UPDATE*] OFFICER-INVOLVED FATAL SHOOTING IN CAVE JUNCTION

Incident Location: 9000 block of Holland Loop, Cave Junction, OR
Case #: 12001219

White male, 5'11/225 lbs.
221 Aries Dr., Cave Junction, OR

Cave Junction, OR -- Last night, at about 10:13 p.m., there was an officer-involved fatal
shooting in the 9000 block of Holland Loop.

At about 10:07 p.m., a sheriff's deputy and his reserve deputy partner attempted to stop
the suspect, 46-year-old Walter B. Phillips, for a traffic violation near the intersection of
Redwood Hwy. and Caves Hwy.

The deputies activated the patrol car's overhead lights, and Phillips sped southbound on
Caves Hwy, refusing to pull over.

The deputies activated lights and sirens and pursued Phillips, who turned onto Holland
Loop at its south intersection with Caves Hwy.

In the 9000 block of Holland Loop, Mr. Phillip's skid his vehicle to a stop, put the pick-up in
reverse and rammed the patrol car. In an attempt to stop him, deputies fired their service weapons, striking Phillips.

Phillips was treated at the scene by American Medical Response and was subsequently
airlifted by Mercy Flights to Providence Hospital in Medford, where he died a short time
later. His next of kin has been notified.

One of the deputies received minor injuries, which required no medical attention.

The Josephine County Major Crime Response Team, which is comprised of investigators
from Oregon State Police, Grants Pass Department of Public Safety, the District Attorney's Office and the Sheriff's Office, was activated. OSP was assigned by the District Attorney as the lead investigative agency.

The names of the involved deputies are being withheld at this time.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to contact Oregon State Police
