Police: Kalama man jilting prostitutes, causing mayhem

Excerpt: "The problems on Green Mountain Road, authorities say, all seem to lead back to a simple fact: A 54-year-old man who lives there likes to hire prostitutes, but doesn't like to pay them.

Since 2009, Cowlitz County Sheriff's deputies have been called to a rickety mobile home on a sprawling piece of land in Kalama six times for all sorts of trouble — broken windows, a stolen dog, a car in a ditch, a man described as a "pimp" chased off by a shotgun-wielding tenant, all because the women visiting the residence perform services without compensation, authorities said Tuesday.

The Daily News is withholding the property owner's name because he hasn't yet been charged with soliciting sex. The man has been arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession after deputies found marijuana plants on the property, authorities said.

But Chief Criminal Deputy Charlie Rosenzweig said details about many of the incidents are sketchy and investigators don't have enough evidence to arrest the man on suspicion of hiring prostitutes.

"If we did, we would — and we will," Rosenzweig said.

Deputies said the man rents most of the property, in the 1600 block of Green Mountain Road, to a family who live in a mobile home farther up the drive. The problem is that this tenant, a man in his 60s, keeps finding himself unwittingly entangled in the fallout from his landlord's activities, deputies said.

On Saturday night, an apparently unoccupied car that belongs to the tenant's son rolled and crashed into a barn on the property. Deputies said the tenant told them he had seen prostitutes at his landlord's trailer the night before and speculated that the women tried to steal the car when their client didn't pay.

The tenant, whom authorities do not suspect of involvement with the prostitutes, told deputies that a few weeks ago "a pimp" came onto the property and confronted him, believing he had been the one who had jilted a prostitute. The tenant said he felt threatened and ran the pimp off the property, deputies said Tuesday.

On one occasion, the windows of the property owner's trailer were smashed out. On another, deputies found a clump of what appeared to be a woman's hair on the trailer's porch. Rosenzweig said it looked as though the hair had been yanked out during a fight. The sheriff's office brought in a K9 dog to help search for the woman. It is believed she got into a car that was seen in the area, he said.

In March, a woman, who described herself to a deputy as "an entertainer," said the man didn't pay her after she struck "an arrangement" with him through a website. She said she took the Kalama man's brown Pomeranian because "she felt he owed her money and considered the dog payment," said deputy Riley McNeal.

The dog was never returned, McNeal said.

A few months later, in May, a woman, who described herself as a Portland-area escort, called the sheriff's office, saying she "spent time" with the man, but ran into the woods after he didn't pay her the expected $350 for an hour of services, authorities said at the time. Deputies found the woman and her friends had driven their car into a ditch.

McNeal said deputies are encouraging the man's tenant to find another place to live.

"We just don't want things to escalate and are trying everything we can to prevent that," McNeal said."
