A CNN videographer spotted Wednesday morning at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation is the latest example of national media attention Kansas City has received in recent weeks tied to the local technology startup scene and Google Inc.’s new Internet network.
KC Startup Village is a growing cluster of Google Fiber-minded tech startups in a Kansas City, Kan., neighborhood near 45th Avenue and State Line Road. It has captured the fancy of numerous newspapers and tech blogs covering the November lighting up of Google’s Internet network. Examples include The Wall Street Journal, GigaOM, VentureBeat and Mashable, not to mention the onslaught of local media coverage.
The CNN crew was in Kansas City throughout the week gathering footage for a Thursday night report of Anderson Cooper 360°, Kauffman spokeswoman Barbara Schulte said. The report is set to run during the 9 p.m. CST broadcast, she said.
On Wednesday, a CNN staffer shot video of Stephen Hardy explaining the business model of Omaha startup MindMixer to a crowd of more than 160 people at 1 Million Cups, a weekly pitch event for new companies at Kauffman’s Kansas City headquarters. The foundation is using the 1 Million Cups formula, which was developed in Kansas City, to roll out the concept nationally.
But Schulte said 1 Million Cups wasn’t the focus of CNN’s report. CNN staff had spent Monday and Tuesday at the Google Fiber Space in Westport and at KC Startup Village in the Spring Valley and Hanover Heights neighborhoods, she said.
An ArsTechnica editor also was in town Wednesday trying out the Google network in the village, specifically the Homes for Hackers House.
