No surprise here. Sad

Quote:MEDFORD, Ore. — Medford has the highest number of violent crimes in Oregon, according to a new report.
Recently, the CQ Press released city crime rankings based on data from the FBI. The report used the number of reported crimes versus population.
With a population of more than 75,000 people, Medford came in 250 out of 432 cities across the nation and last place among Oregon cities.

As is so often the case, the devil is in the details. From the "Methodology" reported on the site from which KDRV picked up this story:

The FBI discontinued use of this measure in 2004 because its officials and advisory board of criminologists concluded that the index was no longer a true indicator of crime. The primary concern was that the Crime Index was inflated by a high number of larceny-thefts, which account for nearly 60% of reported crime, thereby diminishing the focus on more serious but less frequently reported offenses, such as murder and rape. The consensus of the FBI and its advisory groups was that the Crime Index no longer served its purpose and that a more meaningful index should be developed.
While the FBI considers how it will replace the Crime Index, City Crime Rankings continues to provide total crime numbers, rates, and trends for U.S. cities and metropolitan areas as a service to readers. We offer a cautionary note, however, that in 2011, larceny-theft comprised 60.0% of all reported crimes.

So "Violence", to some degree, is in the eye of the beholder. The FBI thinks so, and so is looking for better data (see above).

Good research. But 9 years now the FBI has been considering changing this index, and they haven't come up with a relevant alternative yet? That seems a bit ridiculous.

Let's not discount the enormous increase of MURDERS in Medford for the past few years. The stabbings, the drive-by shootings...

Regardless of the methodology, Medford is no longer the safe haven it was just 5-10 years ago.

I think it's all safe except the west part, isn't it? Smiling

Depending on what you consider safe. I don't consider a town safe if a child cannot go to any local park without being approached and offered free drugs, or the chance to join a gang.
The west side is encroaching on the east side at this point. Where the railroad tracks or freeway used to separate east from west, it's now more like Crater Lake Ave. or even Springbrook/Sunrise/Highland.

A substantial part of my retirement plan is on the west side of Medford, I'm sorry to hear that. Sad
