Speaking English in America

OBAMA: ILLEGALS MUST LEARN ENGLISH, GO TO BACK OF LINE FOR CITIZENSHIP
In President Barack Obama's weekly address, he makes a hard sell for the Senate to pass the immigration reform bill currently under consideration. While describing a path to citizenship, the President takes an uncharacteristically harsh stance:
"This bill would provide a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are already in this country illegally--a pathway that includes passing a background check, learning English, paying taxes and a penalty, and then going to the back of the line behind everyone who's playing by the rules and trying to come here legally."

Yeah! Like we say "Wash the dishes" and the Brits say "Do the washing up."

We say "Like" and they say "Keen"

We say "bartender," they say "barman:.

We say "Part" they say "Bit"

Do the washing up - British for "wash the dishes"

Keen on/ keen to - a British way of saying "to like" or "be eager to"

Barman - bartender

Bit - as in "the best bit" of a film... Americans would usually say "part"

Yep, I like this thread.

Given that the United States actually has NO official language, this seems pretty silly. I don't see why you'd require immigrants to learn a language that you didn't require US citizens to learn.

And given the state of Facebook and Twitter, I'd say there are a LOT of people who need to learn it.

American English accents make words sound almost as different. We say the word oil like it has two syllables pronounced ''oiyal'' Southerners pronounce it oll.
