Help Please, research of flag etiquette: Singer
#1
I'm not a research specialist. Or any kind of specialist. (I can whistle. Not well, but I can whistle)

I attend baseball ball games at Harry & David Field where the Medford Rogues play. (Come on out)

At the start of each game some local singer sings the national anthem. Only one person faced the flag during the singing, the others face the crowd. I "think" the singer should face the flag but I can't find any good source for this.

Any help would be much appreciated.

PS:
And now my RANTS about this.
It's my feeling the singer should LEAD US in the singing of the national anthem. Most are performers singing in some "style" that does not lend it's self to a group sing along.

The tempo should be upbeat. I've often been at events where the singer (and the crowd) aged significantly before the song ended.

There should be some "basic" standard of dress. It seems less than respectful for the singer to be dressed like a two dollar hooker or a cowboy in chaps.

I hope people who eat, talk, or slump during the anthem get jock itch.

JMO,

I expect a respectful rendition of the anthem. Not some narcissistic asshole's homage to him/herself. As for the audience: Face the flag. Pay attention. Sing if you want.

I don't agree with making your nation an object of reverence. It's just a poem about a battle that someone set to music. Give me a national anthem that glorifies peace, kindness, and equality, and maybe then I'll put my hand over my heart when I hear it.

Thank you, CS. I totally agree.

And I'm totally sickened. Commie is not even strong enough. Excuse me while I go blow some chunks while malcontents bitch about our National fucking anthem on the fourth of July.

The Anthem is about the struggle and fight that founded this great nation.

Yeah some things are WORTH fighting for.

I find it sad and oh so ironic that on this day some choose to exercise the freedom many have died to protect, to bitch about such things as you point out.

Un-freaking real........Sad

I agree tvguy. Some people may not feel that our current military is fighting for our freedom, but this was fought for ALL of our freedom. That is why we celebrate it.
You guys don't celebrate the freedoms that were fought for?

What's wrong with wanting an anthem that looks forward at what we could be instead of backward at how we came to be?

I'm sick of hearing about a battle and a flag. I won't pledge my allegiance to a flag, and I won't put my hand over my heart for a flag. It's a piece of cloth.

At least our anthem isn't as bad as La Marseillaise.

I made no comment on the battle for independence, nor did I mention whether or not I celebrate Independence Day. I only objected to the choice of song for our national anthem.

No point at all in celebrating what could be. We've not acheived your utopia yet. But celebrating the heroes that brought us here, is what we're doing. No one at all is forcing you to celebrate.
No one forces you to pledge allegiance to your flag. So sorry if you were offput by it when you were a child. It made me proud.

Edited to add: you stated that you wanted to go and enjoy the parade. The parade that celebrates what the 4th stands for I would hope. Never been to it, tho. I'm not fond of parades.

If you don't know what's wrong with refusing to place your hand over your heart for our National anthem then I don't think it can be explained to you.

Just Make up your own hippie anthem about group hugs, fairies and rainbows and sing it to yourself when the real one is played.

Tealeaf, you should post more often. You often take the word right out of my mouth but much more eloquently.

It's a piece of cloth...to YOU. It's a symbol of our great country to me. I am a veteran. I take pride in my country. We have problems, sure. ALL places do. It's no reason to hate it, like so many say they do. (not saying that you hate it). I have lived overseas, and visited more. I prefer my home. Where's your perspective coming from? I'm curious? Books? Travel?

My perspective is coming from my own head. I don't see the point of pledging allegiance to a flag, or even a country. My allegiance goes to the nation I wish we could be, the nation I hope we one day will be, and I will fight for that nation.

I don't see the point of having a song to represent your country be about a battle being fought, or a flag still waving in tatters, and not about the things your country stands for. An anthem about liberty, equal rights, freedom... What would be wrong with that?

Aside from the references to god, America the Beautiful & My Country Tis Of Thee would make better anthems.

For a little more information on why our national anthem is The Star Spangled Banner, you can read this:

Where your perspective is coming from does not surprise me.
I rarely click on any link here. Certainly not ones that don't really interest me.
I don't question our anthem. I like it. Smiling
God bless America, is a prayer (listen to the words), interesting that you would like that. Sans God, of course does not surprise me. Who/what would YOU like to bless us?
