Oregon high court to rule on immunization

Oregon’s Supreme Court will decide whether the state has the right to immunize children despite a parent’s objection when the children are taken from the home because of parental neglect or abuse.

The case is called Department of Human Services vs. S.M. and R.M. It started in January 2012 when DHS case workers removed a couple’s eight children from their home in Marion County. The parents admitted to “various allegations regarding the conditions and circumstances of their children, who were between 1 and 8 years of age,” according to court documents.

DHS asked a juvenile court judge for permission to immunize the children at a review hearing in April 2012. The parents objected on religious grounds.

“You’ve done your research and I appreciate that, but I also know that now the children are in the custody of the state,” Judge Rex Armstrong told the parents. “I know that you’re not in favor of this, but I am going to go ahead and order that all the children be immunized as per the decision of the medical provider when the foster parents take them in for evaluation and immunization (and) that they be allowed to immunize the little children as well.”

I understand peoples reluctance to have their children vaccinated. But those people are in essence expecting the rest of society to subsidize their ability to do so, because disease prevention depends on a large part of the population being vaccinated. For this reason, people lacking vaccinations should be kept to a minimum. I think they should recognize the burden they're putting on everyone else to make up for their not being vaccinated, and perhaps compensate society for that privilege in some way as well.

If vaccines are so safe, why do we need a law to shield vaccine makers from law suits when people get injured from their product?

Recently several vaccines used worldwide have also been found to cause infertility, including the HPV vaccines and many of the swine flu vaccines.

You're getting an inference from Bill Gates statement I'm not getting: “The world today has 6.8 billion people… that’s headed up to about 9 billion. Now if we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower that by perhaps 10 or 15 percent.”

I believe what Bill is inferring is that healthier people with better access to health care might help lower population, one of his stated goals (as anyone can see, there are already far too many of us, frankly). I commend him for choosing to spend his fortune in this way.

You can call his vaccines a 'reproductive health services' if you like.
