Iceland Police Kill Someone For First Time. Ever.
#1
For the first time since at least 1944, when the nation of Iceland was founded, Iceland police have killed someone. Not have killed an innocent person. Have killed someone. Period.

The suspect was firing a shotgun in his apartment and out of the windows. Police arrived. Normally, police don't carry weapons in Iceland, so this would have been their equivalent of the SWAT team.

No storming into the apartment. No snipers. No AK-47s and battering rams.

First there were repeated attempts to calm him. Then eventually tear gas. When even that failed, police finally entered his apartment, at which time shots were exchanged. At some point during the operation, two police officers were shot and wounded. The man was also shot, and taken to the hospital on a stretcher, where he was later pronounced dead.

The police chief told reporters: "Police regret this incident and would like to extend their condolences to the family of the man." That's right. The police apologized for killing a man who was shooting at them.

Meanwhile, the police officers involved are being given counseling.

Oh, and there will be an investigation into their conduct during the operation.

Yes, I know we're nothing like Iceland. Women leave their babies in strollers on the sidewalks when they go inside the stores. Police don't carry guns. You can get a lift from a stranger and not think twice about being kidnapped, raped, or robbed. And although semi-automatic rifles are banned, and handgun ownership is extremely low, firearm ownership is actually fairly high, ranking at #15 on the list of guns per capita.

And we're not likely to ever achieve anything remotely resembling what they have. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be trying to figure out if there's anything they're doing that we can adapt that would make an impact, because we sure could use all the help we can get.

I've read several interesting versions of the story, from bare bones to full of factiods, so here are some of the links for you.

And for TV, a link explaining why Iceland has so little violent crime.
