I listened to a bit. Didn't grab me. But maybe a few words from you about what attracts you to it might have caused me to go back and give it another try, maybe hearing what you hear. Or maybe not...like chicken soup, wouldn't hurt.
It was only a suggestion, and I said as much in my original post.
Here's an example: I like this song. I'm not sure why. It's a strange poem (Mr. Newman does this a lot) and the first couple of times I hear it I was not especially attracted to it. In time, it grew on me and I enjoy it from time to time for reasons I don't even completely understand.
Actually Wonky, the song didn't grab me either but I didn't want to say that. I try to make it a practice to not denigrate music anyone posts here. Just because I might not like it doesn't mean someone else might not love it. Everyone has their own tastes in art.
I like Randy Newman, just not all the time. I have to be in the mood but then it's great.
He is an acquired taste I guess. Then too, I first tumbled onto him many years ago with his "Rednecks" album, so I've had time to adjust to him. Basically, I hear his poetry. (Feel the same about Kristofferson)
One thing I'd bet we all agree about: Life without music would be unbearable. My tastes in music are eclectic (Like puppy poop...all over the place) but I never learned to like acid rock or progressive jazz. Growing up in rural surroundings I was exposed to C&W and still enjoy some of it.
And aside: I REALLY like "Adagio For Strings" (the theme for the movie Platoon) and for a long time thought it was "classical"...only to learn it was written in 1936 . And for my money, Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" is "classic", the hell with the critics.
Whatever: I don't understand folks who don't need music.
Hey, it seems you and I agree a lot about music. Except for two things, the country and western. It all sounds the same to me.
"One thing I'd bet we all agree about: Life without music would be unbearable." Absofreakinglutely!! (I think this time multiple !! are in order)
Almost all of us like what ever type of music we grew up with. It's just human nature. I like to think I'm open minded more that most but I'm probably not.
I can't stand most country music but I do like a lot of older country music. Some George Jones. Patsy Cline Tammy Wynett And Marty Robbins. I like a lot of Willies stuff even not the older songs.
Wonky I don't know what "Acid rock" is LOL. I still love and as a guitarist I think Jimi Hendrix is a genius. As well as Jimmy Page in Lead Zepplin.
The same with Keith Richards. And of course Eric Clapton.
Hey, Jimmy Hendrix is a genius by consent of United Nations and the whole damn word. If nothing else, playing the Star Spangled Banner with his teeth proved he could pull us in to listen to what made him that guy who will be remembered forever. "Purple Haze" is about all I remember (Well maybe "Hey Joe" too) because I was a working guy of a "certain age" and just not part of all that at the time. My loss. And Janis. We lost 'em too soon. "Pearl" did Kris Kristofferson then kicked ass with his C&W cut, "Me and Bobby McGee".
Another time. Gone forever but we have the sounds. If we can be saved, it just might be music that does it.
