If it crosses my path I'll read it. I've heard this theory about the Beatles. Most anyone who is interested in The Beatles will tell you that Hamburg is what shaped them. I guess it fits the guys theory. They did put in their dues in Hamburg. They were crap and went to Hamburg and did these incredibly long sets night after night and did for 4 tours. It was the crucible they went through to actually become good at what they did. Before that, they were shite. 10,000 hours of playing in adverse conditions should about do it. So, they paid their dues. And they were incredibly lucky, existed at a specific window of time that greased the wheels of their arc, they had an amazing series of just perfect opportunities and events that happened to them, so, perhaps their story does fit the Outliers formula. I've still heard a lot of criticism of the theory in general, but not having read it myself, I can't give an opinion on the general idea.

Exactly. I don't think one needs to read anything to know that the Beatles instant fame with American kids was not about their incredible talent.
The Monkees were originally just a TV show designed to feed off of the Beatles fame and those guys with very little talent also became huge stars. Because there was a void to be filled.
But unlike the Monkees the Beatles changed with the time and became very versatile and skilled.
Malcom Gladwell said the Beatles were the "greatest rock and roll band of all time"? And he thinks their stardom was because they had to play 8 hour sets 6 days a week and got very good at their craft?
Well the same could be said about 9 million rock bands who never got famous.
He seems to gloss over the fact that the Beatles were just in the right place at the right time. The original records were by far not examples of great musical talent.
Not really; that clip may not include it but all the above is included in the premise of Outliers.
And the Beatles were indeed versatile and skilled and innovative and did all that innovating that today you could construct on a smart phone with just what that had in a 4 track recording studio and their imaginations and talent.
Sure innovative I guess But I don't see much skill or talent. Just like the Monkees were extremely successful who were even less skilled and talented.
The same goes with the rolling stones if you look at their first songs. The lead guitar they played back then was pathetic compared to what they learned later.
