I'm glad to read the deaths from Ebola are decreasing. It's a horrible disease, leading to a tragic and ugly death.

But I think we should keep things in context.

This from WIKI:

From 1979 to 2005, the number of deaths per year decreased 14.97% while the number of deaths per capita decreased by 35.46%. In 2010, there were an estimated 5,419,000 crashes (30,296 fatal crashes), killing 32,999 and injuring 2,239,000. The 32,479 traffic fatalities in 2011 were the lowest in 62 years (1949).

So, we kill over 2,500 people a month in our country on our highways. We killed more people on our highways during the Korean war than combat deaths in our military.

Perspective is all important. I hope the international community will do all that's possible to keep Ebola in check. Experts have agreed that it's unlikely that it will ever be a world wide pandemic, but caution is important.

In the meantime, we might wonder about the tragic deaths in our own country on our highways and start looking for ways to reduce that number.

It's another national problem that is also local and we might wonder how we could help in trying to deal with it in our communities.

And still, I take your point about Ebola, and agree that to continue to be aware of it and discuss it here is important. In context.

Thomas Friedman told us in his book, "The World is Flat" how interconnected we now are.

The real danger of Ebola is poverty and ignorance. Too many people in Africa still feel it necessary to honor their dead by washing the body before burial. Of course washing the body of someone who has died of Ebola means that the one washing the body will most likely be washed next.

Let's hope the developed nations of the world get behind funding the World Heath Organization, Doctors Without Borders, and other agencies to not only treat, but provide extensive and aggressive education for these areas.

Better to nip this kind of thing in the bud that let it spread to other regions around the globe.

That may in fact be at least partially true. Still doesn't change the point. Ebola is a insidious disease and I hope they can contain it. But we must keep things in perspective and the media played the Ebola story for all it was worth for the ratings in provided. My point with drug deaths her in the U.S. is that the media often overlooks or under reports the stories that most effect the lives of those of us here at home.

I think anyone who has been reading this thread gets your point by now Wonky. You have stated it several times.
Yes there are many things that affect our live a LOT more than ebola.
And I guess every time CW posts something about Ebola you will make your point once again.

"That is the longest period since March of last year that Guinea has gone without an Ebola case," he added.
