Ebola Ebola outbreak news

I think we should have a thread on the Ebola outbreak. This will be with us for a while and could get real serious.

Quote:The hunt for people in contact with deadly Ebola was dramatically escalated tonight as the risk of infection spread across the globe like a giant spider’s web.

Initially health officials wanted to trace only a few hundred passengers on two planes which had carried victim Patrick Sawyer, 40.

But – as Cabinet ministers held an emergency Cobra meeting in London – the search was widened to find up to 30,000 people who could be hosting the organism which kills 90% of sufferers.

He was headed for the US.

Quote:Patrick Sawyer was supposed to be at his kids’ birthday party in a few weeks—but he died of the virus before he could board a flight to Minneapolis.

Quote:West Africa's Ebola-hit nations have agreed to impose a cross-border isolation zone at the epicentre of the world's worst-ever outbreak, amid warnings that the deadly epidemic is spiralling out of control.

And it is coming to US soil thanks to the idiots in the Obama administration. They say don't worry as the risk is low that it will spread. If they treated these two Americans in the country where they contracted it the risk would be zero.

DAKAR (Reuters) - A plane carrying one of two U.S. aid workers infected with the deadly Ebola virus has left Liberia for the United States, a spokesperson for the charity Samaritan's Purse said on Saturday.

The plane was carrying Dr. Kent Brantly, the spokesperson said, but could not provide a time for its arrival in the United States. The second Samaritan's Purse staff member, missionary Nancy Writebol, is due to be transported on a later flight, as the plane is only equipped to carry one patient at a time.

People are sooo stupid sometimes. Do you think that this is the first time Ebola virus will be in the US? It's been here for decades. Ebola outbreaks have been reported since at least the 70s (SUDV 1976). Virus samples are collected like stamps by researchers and health agencies (think CDC) and distributed to labs for study. Trust me it's been here for a loooong time. And now you're getting all a quiver about it?

Settle down and take a breath.

They are Americans and they have a better chance of LIVING because they are being treated HERE. I'm not worried but I don't live to find something to blame on Obama.

Emory Hospital has a specially built isolation unit set up in collaboration with the CDC to treat patients exposed to certain serious infectious diseases.

The facility is separate from other patient areas of the hospital and is equipped to provide an extremely high level of clinical isolation. Emory's facility is one of only four of its type in the nation.

At a news conference Friday, Emory officials said patients with Ebola posed no risk to staff or other patients because of the hospital's strict infection-control procedures.

"We don't believe there is any likelihood at all of secondary cases as a result of these patients coming to the United States," said Ribner, an Emory professor in the infectious disease division. "I have no concerns about my personal health or the health of the other health-care workers who will be working in this unit."

After talking to doctors in Africa, Emory officials decided they could provide better supportive care to the Americans infected with Ebola. There are no effective treatments or vaccines — and the death rate in this outbreak is about 60% — so supportive care to treat patients' symptoms is vital. Emory can provide intensive care and has specialists who could care for the patients if they need to be placed on respirators or need kidney dialysis. Ebola often causes kidney and liver failure.

OKSmiling There was someone on the radio yesterday and I only caught part of what they were saying but it sounded like they were claiming Obama was giving special attention to Liberia or this problem or whatever because they were also blackRazz

Nope. You may be mistaking Ebola with SARS. This is the first time to Ebola has been on US soil.

I don't think so....Ebola is a relatively new disease. It has been here via Monkeys from the Phillipines, but never in the human population. It's pretty much been limited to the Phillipines and mostly Africa.

However, Cuzz, I'll give you this. Everytime some new transmittable disease comes out the press LOVES to make it top, front page news, feeding the FEAR factor in Americans. Keep Americans AFRAID.

I think everyone missed the point. Think about it. I never claimed anyone in the US has been infected. The Ebola virus here is in any of several biosafety level 4 labs. It's studied here in the US by researchers. The CDC will have samples of each strain, if not each outbreak, in their virus collection. Biological warfare wonks likely have their own samples. Trust me, it is in this country and has been for probably 30-40 years.

I don't really see any risk difference between active virus cultures in petri dishes and an infected patient in an isolation pod. It's just a petri dish size large.

There actually have been cases of human infection and suspected infection in Germany, Russia and Great Britian. No outbreak resulted from those instances. I think we can to do at least as well.

Well, Cuzz, your OP isn't too clear. It's true the CDC has samples they have collected. They also researched and contained the monkeys who were infected with it. They study the samples in contained circumstances within the CDC labs and confines. But what you said, whether you intended it to sound that way or not, sounded like, (to me anyway) that there have been outbreaks of ebola in the USA. When you say it's "in this Country and has been for probably 30 - 40 years", that sounds like it's been in the population for 30 - 40 years.

Oh, no of course not in the public. I didn't mean that at all. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I read several forums and for days people kept posting all scary and apocalyptic stuff because the two unfortunate health care workers were being brought back to the US for treatment. I was getting frustrated by all the doomsday predictions and claims that Ebola virus has never been here before and blah, blah. Well, yes it has. It's been here all along in the various labs doing research on it and other level 4 agents.

The containment protocols will be much the same as has been practiced for handling these viruses all along. I don't see any greater risk bringing those people back here then if they were bringing in another virus sample, which they have likely done already.

I do see one difference, I generally don't have much sympathy for a petri dish of string virus. These people on the other hand deserve some sympathy and support for the work they do.

OK, rant off. Embarrassed

Mount Sinai Hospital is performing tests on a patient who had recently traveled to a West African country where Ebola has been reported, the hospital says.

A male patient with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms came to the hospital's emergency room on Monday morning.

The hospital says the patient has been placed in strict isolation and is undergoing medical screenings to determine the cause of his symptoms.
