Dr. Frances Kelsey, RIP

I'm posting this because some of use probably owe a debt of gratitude to this women and don't even realize it. Also, I think it demonstrates the importance of governmental regulation in protecting all of us. It does work.

Dr. Kelsey was responsible for blocking the FDA approval of thalidomide for use in the US against strong opposition by drug company representatives. The drug was "marketed to pregnant women as a miracle cure for morning sickness and insomnia." Had she not, the result would have been deaths and horrible deformities for untold numbers of infants.

Thanks for that. Had never heard of the woman but her work was so very important and it a more perfect world this story would be front page and Donald Trump an afterthought on page 25.
