Watched on Netflix (or other streaming channels)
I might have mentioned somewhere that we've recently gone 100% streaming for our TV. I started watching Penny Dreadful a couple of weeks ago. This is not really the sort of show that I would normally watch but I thought I'd give it a chance. It hard to explain the plot but it adds a new spin on Jack the Ripper, Frankenstein, the occult and probably some other things as well. It's quite morbid and vivid and the acting is good. I was having a lot of trouble following along until about the end of episode 3 and then it started to make sense. Last night I was just getting to the end of episode 4 when 2 of the main characters, both men, decided to start making out and undressing each other. I've said before that I find these type of scenes revolting. I can get past it if it's just implied... but I say "no thank you" to graphic scenes of gay men.

Why is it that all of the sex, (not just gay sex) has to be so vividly displayed on these series? Game of Thrones was borderline soft core porn. It has a couple of gay scenes that I just skipped past and watched the rest of show. I may end up doing the same for Penny Dreadful... but if it becomes too frequent I will end up finding something else to watch.

To be clear, I am not a prude and the vivid sex does not bother me when its straight or even lesbian. But it does turn my stomach a little when its men. If that alone makes me homophobic then hang the label on me. But I honestly don't care what people do behind closed doors as long as it does not involve abuse.

Anyway, has anyone watched the complete series? Is it worth putting up with some stuff that I don't care for? In the case of GoT, it was.

Scenes such as that almost never drive the plot or add anything of value to the story, I view it more as the ongoing social commentary that has to be inserted into everything, it's done to desensitize and continual movement of the goal posts of what's acceptable to air and shock value.

I think an instance of well done writing and character portrayal w/out shock value for a gay character was Thomas in Downton Abbey. If they had instead used the platform for blatant in your face graphic shock scenes I would of dumped the show, as it was, they accomplished capturing the essence and struggle of his character, making it thought provoking for the viewer, regardless of your personal views on sexuality, and you genuinely felt for the character and for me he quickly became one of my favorites. Had they chose to go the opposite route by making it all about his being gay and look at these graphic in your face scenes we can show that 10 years ago we couldn't have, I would of likely quit watching.

"I view it more as the ongoing social commentary that has to be inserted into everything"

I agree 100%. I think it is inserted as a right of passage into the modern movie and tv business.

Well crap. I said a whole bunch of stuff and I have no clue why it disappeared. Now I've lost the urge to repeat it all.

I did say it's natural for mes to be turned off by seeing gay men fondling each other. I'm also not turned on by gay women.
And I don't think game of thrones had any kind of porn even soft. Nudity is not porn. Nudity is legal in Oregon. My neighbor, sadly a guy, used to mow his yard in the nude.

Also everything I watch is recorded so I FF through and slow boring gay men or sappy scenes. Well when my wife is not watching.
WE differ on what's worth seeing... of course.

Yes. Correct.  As my sister said, every show and movie seems to have to have it's obligatory gay couple or scene. Kind of like when they were integrating black people into shows and then eventually everything and everyone, so now we have a show about Chinese Americans, Hispanic Americans, Black Americans, Jewish Americans.  I mean it's cool, but sometimes all this inclusion is rather exhausting.  And I agree that the soft porn whatevers, do little to drive the plot. I've never seen GoT so I don't know what it's like, but I watch Outlander and I feel that's soft porn. I don't need to see extended bedroom sex scenes, sometimes more than twice in a show.  It does nothing to move the plot forward. But I will say the same about extended fight scenes, or extended graphic violence. Even a chase scene, unless very well done will bore me.

I don't consider simple nudity to be porn. But it doesn't have to have a "money shot" to be porn either. Plenty of scenes in GoT had wanton sex going on with boobs flopping all over the set. Not really anything below the waist though. It's about what you'd find on Cinemax soft core porn only more abbreviated.

I remember back when it was kind of new to be so PC. And you would see babies in a diaper ad.. A white , an Asian, a Hispanic and an African American.

Now I wonder how they will depict a gay baby? Rainbow diapers? Laughing

That's pretty much like outlander. No money shots, but extended nudity and sex scenes that can go on for quite a while. How is that moving the plot along?  But the question of what is soft porn still exists. It's portraying sex and gratuitous sex, (even if it's between spouses).  I feel like the sex is sometimes the only thing that relugates the pay station programming to their stations and not just another station. Or gratuitous violence. That's it.

I don't remember that on GOT's   The scenes I remember were not going on for quite a while and like I said most of the nudity went along with the story or where they were. That's just not any kind of porn IMO.

I still can't believe you or anyone for that matter has not yet seen GOT's LOL

I don't remember that on GOT's   The scenes I remember were not going on for quite a while and like I said most of the nudity went along with the story or where they were. That's just not any kind of porn IMO.

I still can't believe you or anyone for that matter has not yet seen GOT's LOL

Well, I didn't have HBO for years when it started. Then I did, but never, ever did HBO do an extended marathon so I could catch up.  Now I don't have HBO again....so...maybe, someday...

Well I decided to watch the rest of the episode and so far it was much ado about nothing.  I had tuned out just as they moved in for a smooch. It so happens that the episode ended at the very moment. I'm hoping that's the end of it... I kinda doubt it though.

So now I am on episode 3 of season 2. I'm not binge watching because its not that engrossing. But it is a good watch and I am glad that I gave it a try. I never would have thought that I'd enjoy a show about vampires and zombies and the occult... but the writing is solid and the acting is great. It reminds me of GoT in that I never would have never seen myself watching an entire series where dragons and "the dead" are a central part of the plot but it sucked me right in. I'm not giving Penny Dreadful 5 stars... I'm just saying that it's worth a look.

We watched "The Upside" and "Green Book" via Redbox over the last couple of evenings. We both thought that Green Book was going to be the better of the two... we were so wrong! Green Book is a good movie, but The Upside was so much better!

There is a funny little show in Netflix.  It's very silly, and kind of random and goofy and honestly ridiculous, but fun to watch.  It's only about 15 minutes per episode, so, no big investment of time. It's very goofy, but I couldn't stop giggling at it.
