News Release from Oregon State Police

Posted on FlashAlert: September 11th, 2015 6:41 AM
On September 10, 2015 at about 5:38PM, OSP Troopers and emergency crews responded to the report of a two vehicle crash on Highway 199 at MP 27 (just south of Kerby).

A 1999 Buick Sedan operated by a 27 year old male from Costa Mesa, California was traveling northbound on HWY 199 and attempted to pass another vehicle where passing was not allowed (solid double line). The Buick traveled into the path of a southbound 2004 Ford Pickup where they collided head-on.

The operator of the Ford, Michael E NOLAN, age 34, of Cave Junction suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital by family members.

The 27 year old operator of the Buick was initially taken to Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass but then transferred to Oregon Health and Science University in Portland for serious injuries.

A 21 year old passenger in the Buick from Costa Mesa, California was taken to Three Rivers Medical Center then transferred to Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford. The status of their injuries are unknown at the time of this release.

Three other passengers in the Buick, all in their 20s from Costa Mesa, California, died from their injuries either at the scene or while being transported to the hospital. The names of the occupants of the Buick will be released when family members have been notified.

Preliminary information indicates alcohol may have been a contributing factor as well as the unlawful pass. The highway was closed for approximately 4 hours with intermittent single lane openings.

OSP was assisted by the Oregon Department of Transportation, the Illinois Valley Fire Department, the Josephine County Sheriff's Office, the Josephine County District Attorney's Office and American Medical Response.

This is an ongoing investigation and more information will be released when it becomes available.
