That said, each night she has improved. Last night at bed time she didn't whine at all... climbed in and got comfy. But, every 2-3 hours she wants someone to come be with her. Let me tell you... sleep deprivation is a real thing! Yikes.

Yeah, I want a mature dog. One that is amenable to some training, gentle and not obstinate or mean. What is the benefit to crate training?

I'm away from home for 10 hours a day. That seems excessively long to keep a dog in a crate.

In a crate! No... at all... period! A dog doesn't want to be left alone that long anywhere.

That's why we've always had two dogs. That way they were never left alone
Or if one dog has a nice yard he can be alone 10 hours during the day while the owners are working.
My outside dogs sleeps a lot during the day anyway.

They may not, but it's not cruelty. On the other hand I've met owners at work who told me their dog was at home in a crate. I think THAT'S cruel.

That's the biggest reason people use crates. I don't think it's cruel. Dogs are 100 time more adaptive than humans. And tougher.
If you think that's cruel then so is the way sled dogs are kept and raised.
And those guys love their dogs.

And those guys love their dogs. Well, the dogs seem to love it, from what I know. Huskies and malamutes and the like seem to thrive on it. But my knowledge of it is a bit limited.
