Happy May Day?

They stole my fun, pleasant, innocent holiday.

I grew up in a small Oregon town where on May 1st we enjoyed a festive holiday including the winding of the May Pole, picnics (weather permitting), baseball games, and a general fun day remembering the past traditions of our long ago practices of planting and hopes for a good harvest.

Socialist labor movements and The Soviet Union turned it into a entirely different celebration. I have no problem celebrating a day honoring working people. But, I hope we can remember and honor the traditions of the past that connect us to those who came before us and helped establish the many traditions still important.

From WIKI:

May Day is a public holiday usually celebrated on May 1. It is an ancient northern hemisphere spring festival.[1] It is also a traditional spring holiday in many cultures. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the celebrations that the day includes.

In the late 19th century, May Day was chosen as the date for International Workers' Day by the Socialists and Communists of the Second Internationalto commemorate the Haymarket affair in ChicagoInternational Workers' Day may also be referred to as "May Day", but it is a different celebration from the traditional May Day.
