Tell me all the good and bad about Medford.

Retired, living in Lincoln county for 25 years. Considering Medford area to finish out retirement. What does the future look like? Will also be using the VA facility. Info on golf courses and condos with a view would be great, as well.
All comments and advice appreciated. Thanks.

Living as I do out in the country, I don't have any info on the condo side, but what I know of the VA is..... it's the VA. I've heard it's above average as VA's go. Pay no attention to the haters. God only knows why they don't move away if they hate it so much.

Medford is like everywhere else. The more money you have, the better the future looks. More money equals better golf and better views.

You might have at least added some comment to explain that.

I used to think eventually I would move back to Southern Oregon. No longer.

Medford is like everywhere else. The more money you have, the better the future looks. More money equals better golf and better views.

Of course that's true.
But details are all important.
First: Have you been checking our weather? Lots different than most of Lincoln County!
About condos. Not a great selection of condos that I find attractive but thats a personal thing. Many real estate sites (Zillow) will prove the point.
I gave up golf but played at the many courses here and they range from cheap 9 hole to more expensive full service courses. There is the Rogue Valley Golf Course and Club if you are avid about it.
Of course you probably know of the Shakespeare Festival, Britt, and we have several playhouses and The Craterian Center of performing arts.
Plenty of good places to eat.
Like baseball? We have a local "wood bat" summer league and a team known as the "Rogues" with ONLY college players (from all over the nation) who play summer ball to maintain their skills. Our local ballyard, "Harry and David Field" is a great little intimate stadium with comfortable "big league" individual seats (and general admission bench seats with backs).

A word: You might NOT want to judge the area by the comments you will often see on this site. We tend to be small group who have known one another for a long time and in my opinion the dialog you see here should not be seen as typical of neighbors you will have.

And finally: Bring you own money or business. Jobs here are not all that easy to find outside the service sector.

Good luck. Come on down for a few days, rent a nice motel and have a look around. Many of us feel "The Valley of The Rogue" is the best place on either coast.

Watchdog? You mean Wolfdog?

And since you did not use the reply feature, not sure who you directed this to.

And what did I miss, if anything?

(If I missed his original post, plase direct me to it)

I think you'd love Eagle Point. Good golfing, easy access to the Rogue River and Mountains.
They have a super Wal*Mart and you are minutes from the Dom. I go there as secondary heath care. Nice folks, and I don't think we are as beset with problems as the big city facilities.
The weather is wonderful, much drier and warmer than the mid coast.
Josephine County is a whole other ball game.
You'd like it here-for retirees it is a good life with plenty of medical specialists, we are a center for that stuff.
Lots more golf than EP, too. When my sister visits from D.C., she always brings her clubs. She's fond of Centennial.
And yes Wonky, I don't think wonderdog is
Looking for a service job.

Yep. I have two retired friends who (retired early) came to the area needing to supplement their income. Just sayin'...

I was just mentioning what BBQ probably meant.

BTW I can and do make money HERE Easily and I'm retired. But yes I guess a "Job" is hard to come by for a senior.

If one has a job, they're not retired, at least to my way of thinking. Making money isn't the same as having a job.
You are very correct, TV.

To the OP: as you can see we don't agree on much. It's not that we always disagree, just that we have a lot to say without really saying much.

Best come for a visit and see for yourself. Now is a good time.

Well...
Not so simple. For instance I know two guys retired from the military, both enlisted men. They retired after 20 years service and the monthly retirement is not all that great. One took and accounting class and does tax work (all year), the other works for the Sate of Oregon.

And too, in this age of "downsizing" there are people who are forced to retire long before the time when they would receive full benefits.

Matter of fact, I retired at age 57 with a reduced retirment. I did so willinging and gladly, and was lucky enough to have invested a bit and live comfortably since. (The only work I've done is upaid volunteer jobs)

So yeah, making money is the same a a job.
