I know we have been talking about the MP97 fire in a few different threads. I think it's time to dedicate a thread specific to fires that impact us locally so we can have an easy to find reference for each summer ruining fire(s). Air quality talk can still live in the other thread. I just want to have a place I can refer to in the future regarding fire talk.
Having said that, this is from a fire manager meeting yesterday in Glendale.
“We have a major highway artery, Interstate 5, power lines that serve Medford and Grants Pass, and we have a natural gas pipeline through the heart of this fire. To the north are the communications that serve Douglas County’s southern end, the sheriff and the 911 system … [and] a water intake supply for the City of Canyonville,” explained Douglas Forest Protective Association District Manager Patrick Skrip. “It doesn’t get much more complicated than this.”

More Info:
Smith attributed the fast progression to “receptive fuels. It doesn't matter where a spark lands it just keeps catching fire."
He said he wanted to be clear that crews are charged with full suppression of the fire.
“We’re not managing fire. We’re not allowing things to burn,” Smith said. “We know the value and risks out there and the threat to the community and we are giving it everything we have to try to put this thing out. Absolute full suppression."
Since the Milepost 97 Fire is the first major wildfire in the Pacific Northwest, he said there are considerable resources available.
I think this is a key distinction and finally puts proof out there for something not usually voiced by those in charge. There IS decisions being made regarding managing and suppression when dealing with these fires.

Now stating 10% containment.
The bad news, that is only taking into account the ocean as one of its borders.

Amen to that! Actually the tree fire is named for the "tree of heaven" camp ground that's nearby so it's actually a good name.

I've been thinking that myself. Like this is one positive thing. The only positive thing. Well, and the weather isn't scorching. Yet.
