So a couple of weeks ago, I scored one of these for $2
A very cheap mask, but it's got a fair seal around the edges. Problem is the filter element. Very porous, only stops visible dust. It's my starting point. The filter element is easy to pop out. I placed in front of it filter material which is rated 99.9 at 0.1 micron. Placed 'cotton' backing back and then snapped the plastic backing (inside mask, not shown) back on. I now have a pretty good mask , I'm looking at sealing the sides better.
My filter comes from a roll that is 1 1/2" wide, so I had to cut two strips and overlap them. (I may add a 'glue' on the over lap on my next build)
I suspect the elastic band my degrade quickly. I'm going to look for better elastic straps at Walmart when I go in.
Overall, I'm pleased with the 1st proto type. I'm going to see if any more of the mask are available and make a better one.
I just happen to be lucky to have a few small rolls of filter tape.
