Manure makes them fork and do some other weird things, I can't remember what now. This is going from my master gardener training 30 years ago.
They also told us to not use sand as a garden additive, because it turns clay soils to concrete. OK, not really, but that's the effect. I've seen people do it but I consider it more risky. Organic matter (like, forest litter, for example) is better.
