Rye or even annual rye grass would be a good ground cover and would add nitrogen to the soil for spring planting. I have some Vetch that started growing in my garden; I hate the stuff, but will leave it because it does the same thing.
I tilled my garden today I needed to see if my rototiller was still running Anyway and put it in out of the rain. I want to plant something. I remember there's some kind of bean or something that you can plant for the winter and it actually puts nitrogen in the soil.
I don't want to Google it.
Or Kale? Who knows what is a good ground cover( so it's not muddy) is in this area?
I think ground covers like oats should have been planted in late September so they could develop good roots before the first frost. So, I would probably stick with rye grass.
I have not planted a winter vegetable garden in a few years. However, I was thinking about planting a row of broccoli and cauliflower along one edge of the garden to harvest in late December. I am still thinking about it and probably will until it gets too late to plant.
