In all the years that I haven been growing a garden, I have removed weeds the old fashioned way, by hand tools. However, one year, at another garden site, I used a product called Preen, which is basically a pre-emergent herbicide that dissipates from the soil after about 3 months. But I can't imagine any herbicide as a good thing to use in soil that you are trying to build up into an excellent growing material. This year I wrestled with the idea of using it again but decided against it.
That means that I will be performing labor intensive weed removal. I mostly rely on a hula hoe which removes weeds by cutting them off just below the surface. Any tips from you gardeners are appreciated.
