91,000 Plants. Nice to see them keeping out that cheap hispanic competition. Smiling http://www.kval.com/news/local/124084609.html

Excerpts: "Growers terraced a mile of ravine on public land, transforming the remote corner of Northeastern Oregon into what is believed to the largest outdoor marijuana growing operation ever discovered.

The Oregon State Police SWAT team and the Oregon National Guard assisted local law enforcement on Wednesday in raiding the camp. Six men were taken into custody.

Over the next two days, law enforcement destroyed 91,000 marijuana plants and inventoried the impact of the illegal grow on public lands managed by the USDA Forest Service.

"Many people would be outraged at the damage to our public lands caused by illegal marijuana growers," said La Grande Police Sergeant John Shaul, team supervisor of the Union/Wallowa County Drug Team.

The USDA Forest Service, with the assistance of the OSP Fish & Wildlife Division, is going to survey the site to determine the magnitude of environmental damage.

The plants were concealed in several separate pods developed by removing trees and underbrush to camouflage the grow site. The area was laced with miles of plastic irrigation tubing.

Police declined to identify the exact location of the grow site other than to say it was in remote northern Wallowa County. That puts the site not far from the Idaho and Washington borders.

...Police arrested and lodged six men at the Union County Jail [yes, for those of you that wonder, they all have hispanic sounding names]

...What you can do

People are urged to pay attention and be aware of possible signs of illegal outdoor marijuana growing activity including:

* Seeing vehicles and people in unusual locations, at odd hours, or dropping off or picking up people in remote areas
* Coming across a vehicle or person with an unusual supply of camping equipment or other items such as fertilizer, PVC pipe, irrigation hoses, small plastic planters, propane tanks, tents or tarps and gardening tools
* Unexpected encounters with people armed with firearms outside of hunting season or non-traditional hunting areas
* Finding fish kills in streams or large amounts of garbage in a remote area with empty bags of fertilizer or other chemicals, piping, plastic planters, and camping equipment
* Seeing people in remote areas starting to landscape or clearing land
* Noticing foot paths or trails that seem heavily used in non-traditional hiking or trail areas

"If you come across possible marijuana grow site, make a mental note of your location and any landmark, GPS coordinate, or other identifiers to help police easily find it. Exit the same way you entered the area and be watchful for any unexpected surprises or people, then call police," said Shaul."

Sounds enourmous.

The problem would go away if they decriminalize it.

Poor people with get rich quick ideas would quit growing in our forests?

I heard from one industrious young man about planting truffles in the national forests, then coming back later to harvest where only you knew where. There are probably other schemes waiting for the truly clever.

Yea, I wanted to buy land to plant hair. only needed a tiny plot. I know a gal downtown who has just a tiny bit and made a BUNCH of money last year. Good ideas are tough to really make happen.
