An 89-year-old woman lost $3,000 to a scam after she wired money to Bulgaria with the promise of a cash reward, Syracuse police records stated.

The East Brighton Avenue resident said she got a call June 1 from "Mr. William Cooper," saying she had won $250,000 but needed to send $1,500 cash payments via Western Union "to cover various financial obligations," records stated. She had to keep the deal confidential.

The elderly woman sent two payments to "Zhan Aleksanbov Stoyanov," in Sofia, Bulgaria, records stated.
