Info about teeth, etc. please

I have a abscessed tooth. (Damn right I've been grouchy of late!)
They could not find the 2nd canal to remove the nerve, and I'm going to lose the tooth. It's "near the front", one tooth to the rear of the "canine" tooth.

One tooth, more or less is not a problem.

Here is the problem: Years ago I hit a guy in the fist with my face and lost a couple of front teeth. Later, had some back ones pulled because of an industrial accident. Then later, had to have another pulled that would not respond to root canal treatment (also near the front).

So I have a partial plate. The tooth that is going to be removed is one that the plate "hooks on to". They tell me they can add a tooth to my partial. This partial has been in my mouth for over 10 years.

Should I just get a whole new partial plate? Or, should I consider dentures. I've got only a handful of teeth left (upper) anyway. One advantage of the partial is that it covers only a small portion of my palate.

So, how the hell does one go about getting good information about options? The Internet is not much help (or I have not be able to track down the right sites).

If you're a dental person, I'd appreciate your feedback.

And yes, getting old is not for sissies.

What does your dentist recommend?

Already have HIS opinion.
Trying to gather some others.
(Angry with him...the abscess is now damn near a month old and I feel his has not been as attentive as he might be. It was "all about his schedule", while I thought this warranted more immediate attention)

I've been told 4 out of 5 dentists recommend Trident.

Beyond that I'm of no help. A second opinion , but that costs. I've had good luck with Miller in GP.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I can only offer you my best common sense answer. If the teeth you will have remaining are not deteriorating like your current tooth, don't do the full denture thing. Pretty sure full dentures suck. I would think your dentist would only suggest full dentures if there was no other options. I would also get a second opinion. I would look for a dentist about five years out of school so they have all the most current techniques available. It wouldn't hurt if your new dentist was young and pretty too. It makes the trip to the dentist just a wee bit better. Big Grin

Sometimes when asking Mr. Google for help you may not ask the right question. I tried this:

Hope it helps. Good luck!

Upper dentures aren't all that bad...really. Especially if there is a couple places to put snap ons. There is a natural suction that holds them in.

Fight like hell to keep your lower teeth.
Lower dentures really really suck. There is basically nothing to hold them in place.

My vote is upper denture and spend a fortune on keeping your lower teeth intact.
(for what it's worth)

A big thanks to all! I know this is a very personal thing to post, but I really did want other opinions.
Crone I think you have said what many others have said. (Thank God no one knocked out any of my lower teeth, and they are in pretty good shape considering my age.
Thanks Value/S. Good info from Google. Your "other" advice good too. Big Grin
O/67, you are a big help. Well, you might have been 60 years ago. Wink
Thanks again. I am going to talk to my dentist (have been seeing him for 20 years) for a second opinion before anything drastic.

Now you all know a lot more that you ever wanted to know about my personal condition. Will try to not do this again.
