Ashland man linked to one of city's worst fires released from jail

Just what is society going to do with people like this? For only two weeks in jail this must be a huge disappointment to the police, the prosecutors, judge and the jury if one was involved. Amazing, I do have to say.

"A homeless man who is believed to have set off an Oregon town's worst fire in a century has been released from jail after serving two weeks of an eight-month sentence on unrelated charges.

The Medford Mail Tribune reports John Thiry, 41, was released from the Jackson County Jail on Sunday because of overcrowding. He was serving a sentence for a conviction on menacing, harassment and disorderly conduct charges stemming from an incident in which he threw rocks at two middle school girls in May.

The formula for who qualifies for such releases is based on a calculation that includes convictions, release date and time served.

In a previous trial, a judge said Thiry was likely responsible for the Aug. 24, 2010, fire that burned 11 Ashland homes, but prosecutors did not prove he was consciously aware of the damage that would result.

The fire jumped Interstate 5 and quickly moved house-to-house through the neighborhood built in the 1970s.

Judge Lorenzo Mejia ruled in the nonjury trial that while he believed Thiry was behind the fire and said he could have been found guilty of criminal negligence, the state had instead charged him with reckless endangering and reckless burning, which it did not prove.

Thiry was acquitted of (those) charges."
