Me either, or car races either. Or any kind of race really.

EDIT: This was an air race not an air show.

Our friend called to say she was okay. "Uh...ahh...okay? She was there yesterday. This stuff is nuts!!!! I had to run over the admiral's flowers with a crackerbox to get to the wreck at The Pt. Mugu Show. He was pissed. But then, no one was happy with me. Just a few weeks back the head of the Blue Angels quit, after he almost sent them searching for John Denver. They pass this off as training, but these guys are headed for desks, when they finish the stunt tour.

The pilot who crashed and died was 80 years old.
It was some kind of vintage war planes flown by vintage pilots show. Sad

Initialy reports sound like the pilot made heroic efforts not to go straight into the grandstands and box seats and managed to get 20 or 30 feet outside the seats before crashing..still sad...

From what I hear he was 74 and an ex Hollywood stunt pilot. The most likely cause of the accident was a failure of one the elevator flaps on the tail section. Pushing the limits in racing sometimes lead to tragic results. I hope they move the course back away from the spectators next year and not just ban the event. RIP...

Also kudos to the event organizers for having a plan in place and executing it so well that they had a very organized and quick medical response. It is obvious they have planned for the worst in hopes of never having to make use of it. All reports so far show the spectators as well kept their heads and made a great response to the needs of the situation!

Here is a link to a picture a good friend of mine took. I just found out he was at the air show with his son. Both are fine, thank goodness.

It shows the damaged tail before the crash.

I attended a race when I was a child. It was spectacular. The danger was obvious to me then though, and I never went to another. I can only offer condolences to those that witnessed the grisly experience I imagined.

There really isn't much that can be done to eliminate possibilities besides banning these events. Since more die from many other things, I hope we realize it for what it is. That remains to be seen.

So, is the guy an "Ace"? I was pretty down on "Motor Sports", until the numbers came in on the brain damage from real athletics. I advise the kiddies to smoke a joint and head for the water park.
