Invasive crayfish spread to Umpqua drainage in Oregon

Oregon scientists say an invasive crayfish has spread to another drainage in southwest Oregon.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife says the northern ringed crayfish, native to the Mississippi River, has shown up in the Umpqua River.

It was first seen in Oregon in the 1960s in the Rogue River, likely introduced either as fishing bait or a release from a school program or a pet owner.

The department says there are three invasive species of crayfish that compete with a native species, introduce diseases and disrupt aquatic food webs. The department urges Oregonians not to use live crayfish as bait, or to release classroom pets or lab specimens.

The spread of the crayfish to the Umpqua was documented by federal scientists who were doing research last summer on the Northwest Forest Plan.

Too bad we can't keep out the unwanted from other states since all they do is bring their diseases and cause harm.Dry
