Top News Stories of 2011

It’s that time of the year when everyone looks back on the last 11 months with a mix of despair and nostalgia; glad it’s over, but already missing it before it’s really gone. Yahoo! released its list of top 10 year-enders on Thursday and some of the biggest news items should come as no surprise. This year saw the essential end of the old War on Terrorism with the assassination of Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan by a group of special ops soldiers Americans had never heard of: Seal Team Six. Where’s the video game?

It also saw one of the worst natural disasters in history with Japan’s 9.0 magnitude quake and resulting tsunami that led to a nuclear meltdown. If everyone was American on Sept. 11, 2001, everyone was Japanese on March 11, 2011.

On a more upbeat note, the Royal Wedding had mothers and daughters waking up at ungodly hours of the morning to watch Prince William and Kate Middleton say “I do.” And Americans joined their Arab counterparts in national protest against those in power.
