Excerpt: "...Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, the Siskiyou County Sheiff’s office says two men broke into the county courthouse smashing the bulletproof glass in a display case holding $3 million worth of gold.
Sheriff Jon Lopey said they do not know exactly how much the thieves got away with, but the case held around 33 pounds of gold.
“This is a big deal for us,” Lopey said. “And we're not happy about it.”
Some of the gold is almost 100 years old. The collection was shown at the World’s Fair in San Francisco in the 1930s.
The burglary is alarming, Lopey says, because two people were brave enough to break in to the courthouse. Although there are alarms in the building deputies say for some reason they did not go off.
“Oh we've been violated,” Jesse Goucher said. “All of the people. It's not really the county. It's the people that were violated today.”
The Yreka native says it's a sign of the times, and some people are getting desperate. He said he remembers going to the courthouse when he was only 8 years old to see the gold.
The front entrance of the courthouse was blocked off Wednesday.
Lopey said they do not know yet how the burglars got into the building, but there does not appear to be any broken windows. He says they do have surveillance video and pictures. Those items have not been released yet.
The California Department of Justice is assisting the sheriff's office in the investigation. Lopey says they plan on offering a reward for more information."

Inside or outside, it was a job. Gold keeps going up as the price of houses goes down. I'm just glad I don't have any gold teeth.

The Old Man's trust is built on gold teeth. Wrenched from mouths in The Camps. He thought The Fuhrer would put him in charge of California. But, instead, he spent fifty years, peeking through the blinds. "Fortunate Son" is a misnomer.

Fortunate Son lyrics
Songwriters: Fogerty, John;
Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Ooh, they're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief"
Oh, they point the cannon at you, Lord
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no Senator's son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh
But when the tax men come to the door
Lord, the house look a like a rummage sale, yes
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no
Yeah, some folks inherit star spangled eyes
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Oh, they only answer, more, more, more, yoh
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no military son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate son, no, no

Those people in Sis County must have plenty of money to just have 3 million sitting in a display.
Some painted rocks would have been just as good.

I agree, and $3million and the situation this gold was in, make this a job worth the risk.. So few of those these days. Siskiyou county made an enormous error here.. And gold is so easy to fence..

New leads tonight in a gold heist mystery that's perplexed police for nearly a year. Police are also offering fifty thousand dollars for the two suspects who brazenly stole gold from the Siskiyou County Court House.
Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey says it's only a matter of time. "It would behoove the two to turn themselves in," he says.
On February 1st- two people, that you see on this security tape, broke into the Siskiyou County Court House, and stole an estimated 1.25 million dollars worth of gold. A gold get a-way that remains a red letter day for resident Sandy Roetto, who didn't even think the display was real."We told our granddaughter this was just an example of what it looked like," comments Roetto.
The thieves entered first with the lights on - unable to open the display case, they left and then came back to try again. Police say eventually they used a fire extinguisher and broke it open
"It was not a good day for us," says Lopey.
Now police are increasing the reward from $15,000 to $50,000 dollars
According to police, an alarm malfunction allowed the thieves to get away. Unfortunately the court house is right across the street from the Sheriff's Department
However, Lopey says they've followed over 100 leads and the upped reward is already garnering new response."I spoke with the detectives this morning and they're already getting new leads, already."
Plus he says they have DNA evidence.
"We run the DNA through a state wide system called CODIS. We have not gotten any hits yet, but eventually these individuals I'm sure will turn up in the database for DNA, so we'll nab them," says Lopey.
Gold is normally untraceable but this Siskiyou County treasure is unique and the Sheriff says it can be tracked down and authenticated...
As always------ if you have any information your urged to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department .
